Steve Kruse, owner of Kruse and Son Smoked Meats Inc., recently took delivery of his 21 Contender Open. Along with his son, he went out for a shakedown cruise to the Nine Mile Bank. He had a trolling rig out, as well as his sonʼs 20 lb set up. The 20 lb rig goes off, and right before their eyes, a good size Marlin leaps next to the boat. Steveʼs son got a chance to fight the fish for a brief moment and then it was gone. Although they didnʼt leader the fish, the thrill of an unexpected catch was enough to know they had picked a boat that could run offshore (very quickly ), and where they could enjoy the ocean in comfort and style. Later, the wind picked up but the ride back in was quick. The boat didnʼt slam down and the 24.5 degree deadrise created an extremely dry ride home.
Steve keeps the boat next to his 52ʼ Ocean so it gives him and his growing sons the opportunity to go offshore or make a quick run to the Point Loma or La Jolla kelp. As his sons grow, Iʼm sure Iʼll see them in the lineup at surf breaks along Point Loma that are only accessible by boat.
